Immersion Experience: New Mexico

Day 1: Fly to Durango...

Paige Furgason and Ayla Wulftange
On Day 1, we flew to Durango and drove to the Basecamp for Deer Hill Expeditions.
To start off the day, we met early at DIA, went through security and to our gate.  After we got settled, our gate changed to the other end of the B-Terminal...a hundred miles away!  Our 40-minute flight to Durango gave us a nice view of the Rocky Mountains.  Our kind Deer Hill instructors met us at the Durango airport and brought us sandwiches.  We drove 50 minutes, through Durango and Mancos to the Deer Hill Base Camp.
After a welcome and tour of the Base Camp, we got settled in our cabins.  We gathered under a spreading cottonwood tree to learn about the geography of the Four Corners Region and the history of the Navajo People.  We learned that the Navajo call themselves "Diné" which means "The People."
We took a hike up the eponymous Deer Hill, which has a great view of Mesa Verde National Park.  On a Deer Hill flag, we wrote our intentions and values for the immersion trip.  After a tasty dinner of shepherd's pie, we played some icebreaker games.  We wrapped the day with a reflective sharing of hopes and fears.
Tomorrow: Palm Sunday Mass and drive to Spirit Farm in Vanderwagen, New Mexico.
