Immersion Experience: Tijuana

DAY 1: WELCOME TO SAN DIEGO

By Caleb Aex and Thayer White
Today we arrived in San Diego after a short flight from Denver.
Today we arrived in San Diego after a short flight from Denver. While boarding the bus we met Alethea and Dr. Amy Kennemore. They are guiding us for the trip. To start out, we went to Las Cuatras Mildas, a traditional tamale restaurant. We went to a park to eat our lunch. The park had murals all over it. There was also a museum of art based on the Chicano Movement. We were able to learn more about Chicano history and see some impressive art. Then we looked at the murals. They were painted on the pillars of a highway. They depicted Latino history with different portrayals. One that stood out to me was a painting of a father and daughter who drowned in a river. This one stood out to me as it was based on a real photo recently. Another quote that stood out to me was “I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees.” I thought that that quote showed the courage of the Latino movements. Next, we went to the hotel that we would be staying at for the night. We had some free time before dinner. I played cards with the other guys on the trip. This was a good time for bonding. We then met to go to dinner. We had some really good pizza and the walk around San Diego after allowed us to get to know each other better. We had a fun start to the trip, but this was just the start and I’m looking forward to the rest of the trip.
