Immersion Experience: Tijuana
DAY FOUR: Deeper Explorations
Today marked the fourth day of our immersion experience, and after an early breakfast, we packed up for a long trip to Tecate, a city near the U.S.-Mexico border. The drive took around two hours, but it was more than worth it!
Upon arrival, we had the unique opportunity to interview our bus driver, gaining insight into his work experience and personal stories about living near the border. His perspective offered us a closer look at the complexities of border life, and we realized just how different and privileged our own passage through the Tijuana gate had been compared to the experiences of many others in Mexico. Our journey led us to Parque del Profesor, where we met Cesar, the headmaster of the Tecate Monastery School. Cesar brought along students from various backgrounds, and together we learned about the park’s rich history and its environmental significance. Engaging with the students and hearing their diverse perspectives gave us a deeper appreciation for the cultural and educational landscape of the region.
The second half of the day took us across different terrains as we traveled to Mercado Hidalgo, an important landmark market in the area. Immersed in the vibrant economic culture of Mexico, we observed the bustling trade scene and experienced firsthand the exchange of U.S. dollars for Mexican pesos. The market was alive with activity, a vivid representation of the connection between the two countries. After a full day of exploration, we headed back to our condo, where we took time to share our own heritage backgrounds with each other and reflect on the powerful experiences we had so far. The day was filled with moments of joy and vulnerability, bringing us closer as a group. It left a lasting impression that we’ll carry with us as we move forward in our journey tomorrow.
