Immersion Experience: Tijuana
DAY THREE: New Friends
We woke up to find that fog had descended upon us and to the sounds of Tijuana. After breakfast, we took a brisk walk over to Friendship Park, a beautiful stretch of land that runs parallel to the Tijuana side of the border.
We split up into groups to help Ricarbol and Mariah with their work maintaining the beauty of the park. We had three teams: Planting, Flag building, and Mulching. Your authors were in the latter, which wasn’t the most glamorous work, but we still found friendship and moments of joy in teamwork followed by the chance to get our own lunch along the boardwalk. In the afternoon, we conducted an interview with Effren Gonzales at the Mexican Commission for Refugees. He provided invaluable insight on how the Mexican Government views the issues surrounding immigration and gave us a new perspective on the border we’ve been living next to. After that, we relaxed, ate dinner, had a great time just hanging out, and reflected on our day.
Today struck the perfect balance between, community service, filmmaking, and enjoying being with friends, and we’re excited for tomorrow!
