DAY TWO: The Migrant Experience

She drops off water at many different sites and helps start them in their steps to seek asylum. For many of us, this was a very eye-opening experience from all the stories that Karen shared with us about different migrant stories crossing the border. Some of the most impacting were the stories of women needing to take extra precautions while crossing the border in fear of sexual assault, abuse that kids get from border patrol officers, and migrants from other countries as far away as China. We immersed ourselves for a very short time in what many migrants have to experience while crossing the border. We walked in places where many migrants have to hide and dropped off many bottles of water at one of Karen’s water sites.

 

For the afternoon portion, we crossed the border at the fourth busiest port of entry in the world. For us this experience was very easy. However for many others it’s not this easy and comes with many hardships. By the end of today we realized just how privileged and lucky we are to be able to cross between the border so easily. When getting to the condo, we were greeted by Leo and Caro who own a restaurant in Tijuana and will be our chefs for the remainder of the trip! They cooked us an amazing dinner tonight with many different foods. We are very excited for what’s to come and what it will be like to re-enter the United States.
