  • Caroline Howard

Caroline Durham Howard, wife of Jeff Howard ’88, mother to Ian Brown and stepmother to Matthew ’14 and Kateri ’16 Sheber Howard, passed away on August 10, 2024, after a brief illness.

Caroline worked at Regis Jesuit from 2004 to 2022, teaching in the Social Studies and Fine Arts & Media Technology departments, serving as moderator for the Mock Trial and Model UN Clubs and engaging as an adult leader on multiple student retreats. During her tenure at RJ, she uplifted the experience of generations of students with her sharp wit, gift for spinning a yarn and deep care. Caroline had started teaching last spring at Xavier College Prep, a Jesuit high school in Palm Desert, California, where Jeff also serves as principal.

    From Xavier College Prep:
"Like Batman and Robin, Jeff and Caroline were strongest together. Caroline clearly as the Batman and Jeff as her passionate, loyal and committed sidekick. They are a true example of God’s love in the lives of their family, friends, our community and most importantly, each other. Brilliant and compassionate, Caroline dedicated herself to serving others. As an attorney, she was a fierce federal public defender representing the hopeless. As a healer, she was a loving certified nurse’s aide working with the elderly. As a teacher, she was an inspiring mentor and educator. It was in this role that her special gift as a storyteller and talent for immediate connection with others shone most strongly. The number of lives she touched is incalculable."

A Memorial Mass for Caroline will be celebrated on Saturday, August 24 at 11:00 am in the Blessed Rupert Mayer Chapel at Regis Jesuit High School with a reception to follow. The Mass will also be livestreamed from this link on Regis Jesuit’s NFHS broadcast platform. Please note that you need to create a free account on NFHS to access the livestream.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either Regis Jesuit High School, Xavier College Prep or Mullen High School—all three institutions where both Caroline and Jeff served together.

We invite current and former members of Regis Jesuit's faculty and staff to help with food at the reception by either signing up to bring something or contributing to help cover the cost via Regis Jesuit’s Venmo account @RegisJesuit. Please put ‘Caroline Howard Memorial’ in the comment section. The Howard family truly appreciates any support you can offer in this regard.

We join the prayers of the community of Regis Jesuit with yours for the repose of Caroline’s soul and the consolation of her family and all those who loved her. May she rest in peace.

  • Michael "Mike" Tynan '67

Michael "Mike" Tynan '67, son of James '44, also deceased, and brother of Peter '71, passed away on August 9, 2024. Mike had a tremendous legacy at Regis Jesuit with many uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews who also attended Regis Jesuit.

"Mike was a beloved family man, die-hard Bronco fan, father, brother, grandfather and cherished member of his community. Known for his unwavering faith and vibrant charisma, Mike left an indelible mark on everyone he met. His infectious humor and generous spirit brought joy and laughter to all who knew him. Michael, born on June 6th, 1949 was the proud son of Mary Jo and James Tynan. He enjoyed family life with his four siblings Carol, Joan, Pete, and Mary, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends nearby. Their home life was a happy one, where Mike was the constant support to each of his siblings and the one who always was working to keep the peace! He was known for saying, 'just agree with mom and dad now, we will get away with it later!' A proud Raider from Regis High School class of 1967, Michael excelled at Track and Field running the 100 meter dash, as well as being the social butterfly of the class. He attended college at Regis University where he graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts, and Psychology degree. While at Regis College he developed lifelong friendships, served as President of the Italian Club, a language no one recalls him speaking, and earned the prestigious title of Man of the Year in 1971. Upon graduation, Mike began his dedicated career of 40 years to Tynan’s Volkswagen and Nissan. Mike was not just an exceptional businessman and car dealer, but a trusted friend to many in the industry and the Denver community. His ability to connect with others and his genuine care for their needs made him a standout leader in his field and inspirational business partner. It was at Tynan’s that Mike would meet his loving wife of 49 years, Angela Sue Batchelor. Angela and Mike would become married, after a bit of convincing on his part, on August 2, 1975. They would go on to have three amazing children, Casey, Meghan and John. Although the car industry was a rigorous one that demanded long days at the office, Mike would always make it a priority to watch his kids' sporting events. The family enjoyed many special vacations together with a yearly trip to Glendo, Wyoming as a treasured memory. Mike and Angela’s marriage was one that modeled for us all what true love looked like and what it means to love in both sickness and in health. Mike was able to enjoy his final years of life seeing his children as dedicated parents and supporting his grandchildren on the dance stage, in the pool, the basketball court or on the football or baseball field. Often the loudest cheerleader, even when he had on his oxygen, he was the first to provide a loving congratulatory hug or a 'you will get them next time” heartfelt message and encouraging pat on the back. This was always followed by a 'Love Ya.' His legacy of faith, humor, and kindness will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him." Click here to view the full obituary.

A Recitation of the Rosary will be held in his honor on Thursday, August 15 at 4:00 pm at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. A funeral service will be celebrated at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on Friday, August 16 at 10:00 am with light snacks and beverages following the service.

  • Dr. John J. Ahern

Dr. John J. Ahern, father of Trey '13, Mark '16, Anna '20, Luke, Sara Jane and Mary Grace, passed away on May 8, 2024.

"John was born in Chicago, IL, to Marilyn and John ‘Jack’ Ahern on January 16, 1966. He grew up in a faith-filled and fun-loving household. John was an active child often found studying the mechanics of a toaster or building a backyard fort and bicycle ramp out of pallet wood. He attended Mary Seat of Wisdom Parish School in Park Ridge, IL, through the eighth grade and attended Loyola Academy in Wilmette, IL, for high school. John received a biology degree from Creighton University in 1988. It was at his alma mater that he met Jan, who quickly became the love of his life. He went on to earn his Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from Creighton in 1992. John and Jan were married on December 22, 1989, the coldest day in Omaha history! In their 34 years of marriage, John and Jan welcomed their six greatest blessings, their children. John was the ultimate family man, he authentically lived his God-given vocation as a husband and father every day. He enjoyed all things family, especially when all 13 were gathered around the table, squished into one pew, or cheering each other on at sporting events. He adored his devoted and faithful wife, Jan. In his own words to his oldest granddaughter, he proudly said, ‘Mimi [Jan] is my favorite person, next to Jesus.’ John was an accomplished dentist, who served his patients alongside an esteemed and deeply valued team, with great skill and even greater compassion. John ended his dental career just four weeks before his passing. Dentistry was his passion, and truly a way in which he served the Lord through his talents and gifts. John was the most tender and caring dentist, oftentimes more regarded as a confidant and a friend than a skilled clinician. He served while always offering a smile from the other side of the dental chair. While not serving as a dentist, John loved traveling with his wife and family, skiing, mountain biking, hiking, playing with his grandchildren, serving as a lector at Mass, and volunteering at the soup kitchen. John was a proud parishioner at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, and active in the wide-reaching Denver Catholic community. In February of 2023, John was diagnosed with stage IV Pancreatic Cancer. One of John's first responses to the diagnosis was, ‘If my illness brings just one person closer to Jesus, then my mission is complete.’ John's cancer journey started with complete embracement of the Lord's will and radical acceptance of the suffering that was sure to come. He always had radical hope for a miracle cure. With this Christ-centered attitude, John endured a fourteen month battle that included eighteen rounds of chemotherapy, three months of a clinical trial, and three more rounds of chemo. His cancer journey eventually led to a radical acceptance of God's will: God brought many back to Himself through John's suffering and death. Mission complete. In the last months of his life, John suffered with great purpose. He truly united his pain with that of Jesus on the Cross as well as offering it up for others. He suffered silently without complaint, and with great and selfless courage. John was overcome with gratitude by the love and compassion that The Body of Christ showed him, often bringing him to his knees. We would be remiss if we did not end with John's own continuous words, ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you’." Click here to view the full obituary

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Tuesday, May 14 at 11:00 am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church

  • Gary Powell '58

Gary Powell '58, grandfather of Davis '17 and Chalmers '21, passed away on April 17, 2024.

"Gary was born in Denver on December 9, 1940 to William and Helen (Phillips) Powell. He attended St. Louis Catholic School in Englewood, Regis Jesuit High School (class of 1958) and Colorado State University on a basketball scholarship (class of 1962). Gary met the love of his life, Judy Snow, also from Englewood, on the day he graduated from high school; they married on December 1, 1962. His extraordinary love for– and devotion to– Judy was an inspiration to all who knew them. The couple settled in Colorado Springs where Gary began his career as an accountant for RH Lester and Company. Opportunities brought them back to the Denver area where he spent the rest of his career, becoming nationally-recognized as a leader in the manufactured home industry. He retired as President of Equity Lifestyle Properties ("ELS") at the age of 60 after 28 years of service. While he had many pursuits, Gary's true passions were fly-fishing and golf. He grew up fishing the Gunnison River and golfed into his seventies until bad knees made both activities impossible. He and Judy had an extraordinary life together; they were fortunate enough to travel the world on several occasions. He was an avid gardener, a loyal fan and season ticket holder of the Broncos, Nuggets, Avalanche and Rockies. He was a beloved youth baseball and soccer coach for many years. He loved to cook, spend time at his mountain house or on his deck in Centennial, and shared his time, talent and treasure with countless charities that were near his heart. His quiet generosity knew no bounds; there was no one he wouldn't help in any way that he could. He was a cherished friend, a valued confidant and a respected leader. He was an active member of Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church, having served as a Eucharistic Minister and member of the Knights of Columbus until mobility issues made attending services difficult. He was a lifelong supporter of his alma mater Regis Jesuit High School. Gary will be most remembered for his unending love and devotion especially to his wife Judy, but also their children Stephanie and Drake. He was always their loudest cheerleader and biggest champion. He was an amazing role model for being a spouse and father. One of his proudest moments was serving as Drake's Best Man in 1994. His family was the center of his universe- made complete by the birth of his grandsons Davis and Chalmers in 1999 and 2003. From coloring Easter eggs, to carving pumpkins to hanging hundreds of Christmas lights, he loved every sentimental tradition. He cried every time he heard the National anthem. He moved mountains to never miss a game, a performance, a birthday or an event. His grandsons Davis and Chalmers were his greatest joy and "Bapa" was his favorite title. He had a sharp wit, even sharper mind and a beautiful zest for life until the very end– defying the odds many times. His resilience was his hallmark. He was larger than life to those who knew him and the hole he leaves behind will never be filled." Click here to view the full obituary.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Gary's name to DignityFirst Health and/or Elevation Hospice for the phenomenal care and kindness they showed the family during Gary's final days.

  • Patrick Dea '02

Patrick Dea '02 passed away in April 2024.

"Patrick attended Blessed Sacrament Grammar School in the Park Hill community of Denver. He graduated from Regis Jesuit High School in 2002. Patrick continued his education and graduated from the University of Colorado in 2006 with a degree in Spanish and Business. While attending C.U., Patrick spent his junior year abroad in both Madrid and Barcelona, Spain. It was during this time he acquired a love of travel and curiosity of the world and its rich cultures. Following graduation, Patrick moved to Buenos Aries, Argentina, where he worked as an interpreter for small local businesses. While living in South America, he traveled the continent immersing himself in the culture by trying local cuisine and making new friends wherever he landed. After a year abroad, Patrick returned to Denver and pursued a career in business. During his eighteen-year career, Patrick worked as a consultant and implementer of software for Service Now, Deloitte & Touche, and KPMG. Although he worked hard at his craft, Patrick’s greatest love was traveling the world. Those who knew him well have said that he packed more experiences in his 40 years than most people do in a lifetime. Always the adventurer, Patrick climbed Machu Picchu, Peru, rode by donkey through the ruins of Petra, Jordan, explored the outback of Australia, visited the sanctuary of endangered elephants in Thailand, discovered the untapped regions of Mexico, bartered with local crafters in Istanbul’s crowded markets, and traversed the beautiful landscape of South Africa, including photographing Kruger National Park while on a wildlife Safari. Patrick’s travels were not always in search of new adventure. He traveled to Haiti, volunteering to aid Haitian victims of natural disasters, and while in South America, he taught English as a second language to the local Spanish-speaking community. While Patrick is no longer with us, his legacy of love for family and friends, his extraordinary sense of humor and his curiosity of the vast unexplored world lives on in the many lives of those he touched. Patrick was a beloved son, brother, nephew, cousin, uncle, and friend to many. He will always live in our hearts and will be deeply missed. May Patrick’s memory be eternal." • John Kintzele '54

John "Jack" Kintzele, Sr. '54, brother to Richard '52, passed away on April 7, 2024.

"Jack was born in Denver on August 16, 1936, to Louis Richard “Bud” Kintzele and Adele Catherine Kintzele. He was the second of four children, following his older brother Louis Richard Kintzele, Jr., and followed by sisters Adele Locke and Candace Ann Kintzele. Jack’s early life involved school, sports – especially golf – and working in the family wholesale florist business, Kintzele Inc., which was owned and operated by his grandfather Louis Alfred Kintzele, his father Bud, and uncle Leland T. Kintzele. Jack attended Regis Jesuit High School and was deeply appreciative of the rigor of this early educational experience. He was a faithful, lifelong donor to the school. On graduation, he attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and joined the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.  While at CU he earned his bachelor’s degree in business with a concentration in accounting.  After a short stint at an accounting firm in California, he decided to earn his law degree from CU Law School, where he was a member of the law review. He began his legal career and own firm in 1962, incorporating as Jack Kintzele & Associates.  During his long legal career, he was involved in many precedent-setting cases, perhaps most notably the successful federal case that established the potential dangers of the US Government’s Swine Flu vaccine program. This case made national news and was mentioned in the New York Times. Inspired by President Kennedy, and Democratic accomplishments in the 1960’s, Jack broke from his earlier conservative values and became involved in Democratic party politics.  He was an active supporter, volunteer, and consultant to many nationally known democrats, including Colorado Governor Richard D. Lamm, Senator and Presidential Candidate Gary Hart, and Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder.  Governor Lamm in fact once remarked that Jack was one of five people instrumental in convincing him to make his initial run for what became a highly successful three-term governorship.  Jack also ran for political office at a local level. After an unsuccessful run in 1972 for the Denver City Council, he ran for, won, and served two terms as a Denver Election Commissioner.  As an Election Commissioner, he was instrumental in improving election integrity through the creation and fair distribution of registration and polling locations, especially in disadvantaged and previously underserved neighborhoods. He was a generous lifelong donor to the Democratic party." Click here to view the full obituary.

  • Thomas "Tommy" Thorpe '84

Thomas "Tommy" Thorpe '84 passed away on April 17, 2024.

"Growing up in Southeast Denver, Tommy spent his childhood on the baseball diamond, turning early Little League days (more reminiscent of the Bad News Bears than the Little League World Series) into a spark that continued at Regis High School, followed by a collegiate baseball career at Benedictine College, and a lifelong love of the game. After college, Tommy devoted himself to running the family business, Mountain Trade Supply, alongside his cousin, Diana Sweers. Despite the constant paperwork, Tommy's commitment to his employees and customers never faltered. Outside of work, Tommy found joy on the golf course, and at the end of a round could be seen with a cigar in one hand and an Irish whiskey in the other. Although he had many responsibilities, Tommy sought refuge at Bear Creek and any other course where he could escape for a few hours and enjoy the company of those he loved deeply. Tommy did not collect baseball cards, but he did collect and safeguard his friendships. He valued the friends he made through baseball, golf, and work, but perhaps his deepest friendships were with his cousins and his girlfriend, Carly Kirwin. Tommy's passing leaves an immense void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. His enduring kindness, quick smile, and unwavering love for baseball, golf and above all family and friends will be cherished memories for all." Click here to view the full obituary.

"Cheri was a woman for others, well known for her handwritten loving cards and care of those who were without means or a home. Following his passing, she made a commitment to carry on his work and founded with her husband, Father Woody’s Haven of Hope in 1991, now called Haven of Hope. Together Cheri and Don spent the second half of their lives helping to serve countless people, offering meals, support, a place to rest, and the opportunity to get back on their feet. She loved to host parties, Sunday family dinners, one-on-one conversations and cocktail hours. Linda Massey, mother of Brian '97, also deceased, and Michael '99, passed away on February 21, 2024.

"Linda was born in Norman, Oklahoma in 1948 to Geraldine (Jed) and Col. Paul Fisher, Sr. She grew up in a military family, living all over the United States, as well as in Japan and Germany. She graduated from the University of Southern California in 1969 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics. After graduating, she began teaching in high schools, beginning in the Los Angeles area, then moving to Dallas, Texas. Later, Linda went on to pursue a Master’s Degree in Business from Southern Methodist University, and was one of the first women to graduate from the SMU School of Business. Her loving kindness and desire to help others positively affected many lives as she moved through her roles as schoolteacher, and as the first female Landman assisting in the oil and gas negotiations with several tribes for the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO). One tribe was so thankful for her compassionate work that they made her an honorary tribe member during a beautiful ceremony. During her time with ARCO, she moved to Denver, Colorado, and after leaving the oil industry, she began her favorite job of her life in residential property appraisal. This eventually led to the creation of her own company, which she ran until she retired. Linda developed a competitive spirit in her early teens when she picked up her first tennis racket. Little did she know that tennis would become a major passion in her life. With her graceful form, powerful stroke and strong serve, she went on to compete at a high amateur level. She took great pride in her 4.5 and 5.0 ratings, as she maintained them over the years. While in Dallas, Texas, Linda met the man who would become the love of her life: Stanley Price Massey, Jr. They dated, and when she was transferred to Denver, Stan left his job in Dallas and followed Linda to Denver.  They were married in October 1973. Linda and Stan spent 50+ years together enjoying travel, friends, and the births and lives of their two sons, Brian and Michael." Click here to view the full obituary.

"Al grew up and thrived in north Denver (Welby). He attended Assumption Grade School and Regis Jesuit High School. He played basketball and baseball for Regis and continued to play in college – first attending Colorado College (n/k/a University of Northern Colorado) and moving on to Regis College. After graduating he taught in the Mapleton School District for over 31 years, both with elementary grades and high school grades, obtaining his Master's degree while teaching. Al retired in 1993 and went on to pursue several different endeavors including food brokering, airline work and owning his own mobile auto detailing business. He was an integral part of his wife's business from 2002 through 2019, best remembered for delivering paychecks on his Honda Scooter! Al was most content when spending time with his family. He liked to joke that he had been parenting for all of his adult life and it was not far from the truth. He will be remembered for his grandiose stories of tree people, dinosaurs and whatever he could come up with quickly to share with the kids and grandkids. The last years of his life were filled with pain and discomfort, but he handled it well. He was determined to walk again. Although his disease was part of the Alzheimer's family, his mind was relatively spared. He still knew everyone and could watch (and complain about) football, basketball and his beloved baseball."
