LIFE AT 14,000 FEET

Addie Von Steeg
A visit to a school in the clouds...
Today we started our day at 7:00 a.m., ate breakfast and then began our hour and half journey up to Virgin del Rosario de Sullumayo, a small school high in the mountains. On our way there we stopped at the “saddle” which stood at 15,000 ft elevation to take a few photos and soak in the view. Thirty minutes later we arrived at the school where we were greeted by the director who showed us around. We saw the chicken coop, which was in the process of being built, and they explained to us that the purpose of the coop was so that hopefully by the summer the families within the school would be able to have a sustainable source of food. Then he showed us the temporary living quarters of the teachers who taught at the school. He explained that most of the teachers stay at the school Monday through Friday and then drive back down to Cusco for the weekend. Eventually we made our way into the school where we spent time drawing with different grade levels and talking to the students. After that we ate lunch and finished our day with a game of soccer against some of the high school students. Predictably, they won easily.  We’re taking a bit of a rest and getting ready for another Holy Week procession and mass this evening.
