FROM COUNTRYSIDE TO CITYSCAPE: DISCOVERING THE TWO FACES OF PANAMA BEFORE HEADING HOME

Daniel Shea'25, Alexander Sabga'25
After immersing ourselves in the serene beauty of Panama’s countryside—where lush landscapes, tranquil mountains, and charming villages stole our hearts—it was time to experience the other side of this diverse country. As we ventured into the vibrant energy of Panama City, with its modern skyline, historic districts, and bustling streets, we found a striking contrast that made our journey even more memorable. Before departing for the United States, this final chapter of our adventure offered a perfect blend of nature and urban excitement, showcasing the full essence of Panama.
Daniel:
Today, the rest of the bus ride happened, so we woke up at the time of, 4:00 AM, got to Panama eventually, and visited Casco Antiguo, which is the original Panama City. The tour took us around to see a couple churches, and as well as a few ruins. It was hot, and the added early wake up, by the end of the tour, even slightly cooler air felt like heaven. Then we went to the Canal, saw the IMAX documentary that they have for it, very cool, and saw a ship go through, but didn’t see it go all the way through. After going to the last place we are staying, by the look of it, we’re all tired. It’s fun. I’ll miss Panama, but the heat, eh. Not so much.

Xan:
Today, our final day in Panama, was spent exploring Panama City. Going from the humble farms of Cerro Punta to the bustling streets of the capital was a big change, but one that greatly informed my view of the country. We started in the biggest church that I had ever seen. There were memorials, screens, and our time there felt like exploring a museum. Our tour guide also did a good job of informing us of Panama City’s history full of treasure, destruction, and change. We then moved on, exploring nearby shops and buying gifts before taking our last stop before lunch. In this time, we walked into a fancy hotel to see a cool statue of Ignatius, and I was able to find a pretty awesome gift for my brother. We walked into another church that was large, but not as massive as the earlier one. After winding through a few different rooms, we came upon a huge nativity scene that filled an entire room, labeled with the events that surrounded Jesus’ life. We then got back on the bus, ate some lunch, and went to watch a film about the Panama Canal. The film was great because we watched it in 3D in an IMAX theatre and, weirdly, it was narrated by Morgan Freeman. Afterwards, we stepped outside to watch the canal in action as a massive Japanese cargo boat passed through. Finally, we got back on the bust to drive an hour outside of Panama City for our final stay at a retreat center.
