DAY 2: TOUR, KIDS, AND UPCYCLING

by Berit Allen '25 and Jack Candler '25
Today we woke up, had breakfast, and then had orientation. The leader, Olivia, gave us a presentation on Ecuador as a whole and then the Center’s mission...
It was really interesting learning more about what the center does for the families they work with. We then took a tour of the campus and learned more about all of the things the place offers. Next, we ate lunch with the kids at school. We each had to sit at a table with a ton of kids and somehow communicate with them. It was actually really hard to build connections with the kids because the language barrier was more prominent than I thought it would be. Overall, it was a really good experience but I don't think any of us knew what we were getting ourselves into. After, we did a workshop where we upcycled old jeans. It was actually really hard but a really cool idea. Then, we played card games as a group and had dinner. We finished the night off with a reflection and prepared ourselves for tomorrow... by Berit

Today, we had a tour of the Center and had a presentation about the population of Ecuador, Quito, and the families that are members of the Center as well as a brief overview of the problems in Ecuador and struggles the families face. We later had lunch with young elementary students and practiced what little Spanish most of us knew, getting to know some of the students we will see and interact with for the next 6 days. We followed lunch up with a small soccer scrimmage with some students and then an upcycling project where we learned about the sewing workshop and the good they are doing for the community. We left the center and went down to Tuti to see the prices in Ecuador and to get familiar snacks. To finish the day we had a meatloaf dish with mashed potatoes and then a group reflection and prayer, preparing ourselves for the day to come... by Jack
