ATHLETICS PROGRAM HOSTS INAUGURAL SPORTS RETREAT

Ahead of the beginning of the regular winter sports season, the Regis Jesuit Athletics Program hosted its first-ever Sports Retreat on campus. The focus of this retreat, which Athletic Director Todd Schuler hopes to make both an annual and seasonal tradition, was to unite athletes and coaches from all six winter sports programs in prayer, connection and community, offering a deeper understanding of the overarching mission of athletics at Regis Jesuit—to form our student-athletes as strong Ignatian teammates and leaders.
On the evening of November 17, approximately 80 student-athletes representing the varsity teams of Boys and Girls Basketball, Hockey, Girls Swim & Dive and Boys and Girls Wrestling gathered in the Steele Center and The Z Theatre for food, games, prayer and a presentation which led to a thoughtful discussion on how each athlete and team can become a conduit of faith and mission. Athletes were challenged and encouraged to widen their perspective of what makes a successful season - one that does not solely focus on wins and losses but also integrates faith, Ignatian values and camaraderie.

Continuing the second day of this two-day retreat, head coach of the Boys Soccer program, Rick Wolf, led the group in a discussion on how they should strive to demonstrate values and sportsmanship both on and off the field. Retreatants then broke out into smaller groups to discuss more deeply what makes for a successful season and individually journal on ways each one can work to strengthen the brotherhood and sisterhood at RJ and find God in all that they do. Each team went on to develop a Team Covenant where they listed their program's values which will guide them throughout the season. The retreat concluded with a special Mass in the Blessed Rupert Mayer Chapel in the Girls Division celebrated by Fr. Eric Ramirez, SJ. During his homily, he compelled the athletes to be both mindful and selfless as they headed into their season. It was a beautiful ending to a special gathering that called our athletes to continue striving to be the best versions of themselves as Men and Women with and for Others.

As a highlight to the weekend, athletes engaged in a community service project together, preparing more than 80 snack packs to support Holy Ghost Catholic Church's ministry in providing food to our unhoused neighbors in downtown Denver.

On November 29, the Athletics Office held its Winter Sports Convocation in the Girls Gymnasium inviting winter athletes, their families, coaches and school administration to gather together for a special blessing to kick off the season. Each team took turns presenting their newly-established covenants and team values highlighting what they worked on together at the retreat. More than 180 athletes, along with their family members and coaches attended.

With this goal of orienting athletics to focus on mission, Mr. Schuler and his team in the Athletics Office hope to not only bring success to each team's season but also transform the student-athletes into successful teammates and leaders both on and off the field, court, pool, pitch and mat. Go, Raiders!
